I love your fluffy effect with the lines on the darker outlined one 
Yeah, proportions can be difficult. I'd recommend some kind of proportion tutorial, like these:

Or just look at loads of reference pictures ^_^ I always find sketching out a rough skeleton drawing helps, and I can see you've been doing so too ^_^ Good luck and have fun!
